LOCAL RESOURCE GUIDE

The African Studies Program seeks a Local Resource Guide to provide cultural adaptation guidance to Fellows for the duration of the six-week Institute. This work may include guidance mediating cross-cultural challenges, navigating the American medical system and accessing various other local resources. Approx. 15 hours/week. OFFICE & COMMUNICATIONS INTERN

The African Studies Program seeks an Office Management and Communications Intern to assist with the 2017 MWF-YALI program. Duties will include making travel arrangements for guest speakers, organizing events, coordinating publicity, file and database management, and other office logistics or communications tasks as needed. Position to begin around April 15 and needed until Aug. 15, with the option to stay on until early September. Apply through the International Internship Program by March 31, 2017.

UW-Madison Professor of Law Heinz Klug leads a constitution buliding simulation as part of academic programming during the 2016 Mandela Washington Fellowship.

ACADEMIC SESSION PRESENTERS

Academic sessions provide Fellows with an overview of American public management and leadership including public finance, rule of law, education, public health, environment, public sector transparency and accountability, and foreign policy. Fellows use case studies to engage in comparative discussion between their home countries.

COMMUNITY PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS

Community partners include local organizations who are willing to share their work with the Fellows, both through education and discussion, as well as experiential learning and service. The purpose of these visits is not only to serve and network, but also to expose Fellows to the inner-workings of American organizations and workplaces.

PEER COLLABORATOR CONNECTORS

The African Studies Program seeks five small group networking leaders for the 2017 Mandela Washington Fellowship. Group leaders should be located in or near the Madison area and available for weekly lunches (provided) on Wednesdays between June 21-July 26, 2017 to assit Fellows in facilitating meetings with individuals and organizations in the Madison area. Ideal candidates should be interested in cultural exchange and well-connected to some portion of a local Madison professional or academic community. Connections in health, policy, law, social services, education or media preferred. Role will require 1-2 hours of email outside of Wednesday luncheons, and a one-time, $500 payment will be provided. With interest, please email yali@africa.wisc.edu with a brief, 250-word bio and contact information for three references by May 1, 2017.

PEER COLLABORATORS

In order to promote mutual understanding and collaboration between US and African citizens, The African Studies Program seeks collaborators interested in connecting regularly with Fellows during their time in Madison. Peer Collaborators will build relationships with individual Fellows and help to ease the transition to life in Madison. Throughout the six-week fellowship, Peer Collaborators will get to know the Fellows both professionally and personally by meeting periodically to share ideas and promote intercultural understanding.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

The African Studies Program is seeking volunteers to help the Fellows with small trips such as shopping for personal needs, attending religious services, or exploring Madison and surrounding areas. If you would be interested in providing transportation and spending a short block of time with a Fellow or two, please complete this brief interest survey.

COMMUNITY HOST DINNERS

The African Studies Program seeks families or individuals interested in hosting 1-2 Fellows for family host dinners throughout the six-week institute. If interested, please indicate your availability here and our staff will follow-up to confirm.
