African Cultural Education
Knowledge of Africa from an African perspective

Objectives
  • To give Wisconsin elementary students cultural knowledge of Africa from an African perspective. To accomplish this objective, UW-Madison faculty and staff members, organized by the project leader and co-leader under the aegis of the African Studies Program, train UW students of African origin in the art of storytelling. Once trained, these UW students make presentations built around African stories in elementary schools.

  • To engage UW-Madison students of African origin in a diversity outreach program for pupils in two categories of Wisconsin schools that lack racial diversity: schools in mainly white districts in the state’s north and west (Rusk, Wood, and Columbia Counties), and schools in predominantly black areas of the Milwaukee School District.

Topics to be addressed under cultural education:
  • Political and ecological geography of Africa
  • Oral traditions
  • Material culture, such as clothing and instruments
  • Music and dance
  • African philosophy and ethics
  • Language
How do we achieve our objectives?
