- ASSISTANT PROFESSOR--MEDICAL ANTHROPOLOGY, UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS
The Department of Anthropology at the University of Kansas invites applications for a tenure-track, Assistant Professor position in medical anthropology, expected to begin as early as August 18, 2009. We are seeking a broadly trained medical or biomedical anthropologist with a research focus on health in Africa in relation to economic development, globalization, environmental change, and/or political conflict and violence. Candidates are expected to have a strong record of research and ethnographic field work in Africa and the potential and capacity to develop academic and collaborative affiliations with African universities. Applicants are expected to have a PhD or terminal degree in anthropology by the start date of the appointment. The University is designated a Title VI National Resource Center in African Studies. Salary is competitive with those at other research universities. The successful candidate for the position must be eligible to work in the U. S. prior to the start date of the position.
Duties:
1. Teach two courses in each of the fall and spring semesters. At least one course per year must focus on some aspect of African health.
2. Advise both undergraduate and graduate students.
3. Follow standard departmental guidelines for the allocation of effort: Teaching, 40%; Research, 40%; Service, 20%.
4. Engage in scholarly research, including applying for external funding of research projects, presenting papers at professional conferences, and publishing in peer-reviewed venues (refereed journals, monographs, book chapters, and so forth) on a regular basis.
5. Perform service in the form of participation in some combination of department, college and university committees, community outreach, and contributions to professional organizations
6. Direct theses and dissertations
7. Develop student exchanges with African universities and conduct collaborative research with colleagues in those settings.
Required Qualifications:
1. Ph.D. or terminal degree in anthropology expected by start date of appointment.
2. Proficiency in English as the medium of instruction, as evidenced by cover letter and teaching history.
3. Demonstrable teaching qualification in the field of anthropology, as evidenced by course and teaching evaluation scores or other evaluation instruments that assess teaching effectiveness. Instruction performed as a graduate teaching assistant can be used.
4. Ability to teach courses relating to anthropology of Africa and African health, as evidenced by history of courses taught and/or teaching interests.
5. Commitment to teaching in anthropology, as evidenced by teaching philosophy statement.
6. Demonstrable research qualification in the field of African health, as evidenced by graduate and post-graduate coursework, ethnographic fieldwork, and/or publications and conference presentations in the field.
7. Evidence of potential for excellence in research and teaching in the field of medical anthropology of Africa, as evidenced by teaching portfolio; letters of reference; publications in journals ranked highly in the field of the publication; conference presentations at major
national and international conferences in the fields of medical anthropology and African health; externally funded research grants; and/or monographs under review or under contract.
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Teaching and advising experience at the graduate level.
2. Strong research and publication record, based on ethnographic field research and /or multi-year research projects.
3. Record of regular public presentation of research.
4. Record of grant activity.
5. Ability to contribute to qualitative and quantitative research conducted by both undergraduate and graduate students.
6. A candidate who will contribute to the diversity in the College, including a diversity of scholarly approaches.

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR MEDICAL ANTHROPOLOGY-BIOETHICS POSITION
Michigan State University: The Department of Anthropology and the Center for Ethics and the Humanities in the Life Sciences, College of Human Medicine (CHM) invite applications for a joint tenure-track position in medical anthropology at the assistant professor level to commence August 16, 2009. This position will be 60% Anthropology, 40% Bioethics. Candidates must be committed to undergraduate, graduate and health professional education, and display evidence of excellence in research. Desired expertise includes but is not limited to: health disparities, critical studies of biomedicine and the health sciences, ethnomedicine, political economies of health and health care ethics. Geographic focus should contribute to current areas of departmental strength, including Africa, Asia, Latin America and North America. The successful candidate will be expected to conduct externally funded research. Those with prior experience on a medical school faculty are especially encouraged to apply. Boston University Mugar Memorial Library & The African Studies Center Boston University seeks a dynamic and forward-looking librarian to oversee the development and maintenance of a specialized collection of research materials on all aspects of the continent of Africa and its peoples, and will provide access to the collection, reference/research assistance, and instruction in the use of the collection. The Head of ASL supervises a staff of librarians, paraprofessionals, and student assistants. As a member of the Administrative Librarians Council of Mugar Memorial Library, the Head will also participate in planning, implementation, and administration of library-wide services and initiatives. The successful candidate will represent the University at the national level with the Africana Librarians Council as well as serve as a member of the Executive Council of the African Studies Center. This position requires an M.L.S.; B.A. or B.S. in African Studies (advanced degree preferred); knowledge of African affairs from education or experience preferred; and five or more years experience in library management or supervision.
