The African Studies Program secured a 3-year grant (2007-2010) from the Ira & Ineva Reilly Baldwin Wisconsin Idea Endowment to design and develop African Storytelling on Wheels. It brought trained UW-Madison student storytellers to classrooms and assembly halls across Wisconsin to present African folktales in translation and to share songs in African languages accompanied by drums and other instruments.
African Storytelling on Wheels was dedicated to creating a greater appreciation of the legitimacy and vibrancy of African cultures and of the capacity of African traditions to speak to universal human aspirations and dilemmas. See photos.
Though the African Storytelling on Wheels program has been discontinued due to funding, the the African Studies Program still sends UW-Madison students out into the community through our Outreach Scholars Program.
