Job Summary
The African Studies Center (ASC) supports research, teaching, partnerships, programming, and other projects in or about Africa in collaboration with African partner institutions and colleagues as well as relevant units at U-M. Through its U-M African Presidential Scholars (UMAPS) program, ASC serves faculty and departments across U-M Schools and Colleges by bringing promising early and mid-career faculty members at African universities to the Ann Arbor campus, while investing in the academic strength and leadership of the next generation of African scholars. ASC is one of 17 area studies centers within the International Institute (II), which allows it to collaborate on thematic and cross-regional programming and events. ASC also has strong and multifaceted relationships with the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies (DAAS), which serves as the curricular home for African Studies; ASC and DAAS collaborate closely on the African Studies specialization of the Masters in International and Regional Studies (MIRS) program and the African Languages program.
The Project and Events Coordinator position within the ASC and the II is a wonderful opportunity for someone who is committed to our vision to make knowledge about Africa and learning from African scholars and scientists accessible to all U-M students. Annual activities include but are not limited to: public event planning; logistics and travel arrangements; record keeping; meeting support and notetaking; providing event information and short written pieces for e-newsletter; coordinating annual newsletter; and student-facing tasks. The position reports to the ASC Associate Director (Operations and Partnerships), with formal oversight provided by the II Global South Administrative Manager, and academic direction provided by the ASC Director.
