This presentation primarily explores the work of Senegalese director Djibril-Diop Mambèty from the perspective of sound. Mambèty ingeniously uses sound (as voice, noise, music, or silence) as a narrative tool that generates its own stories and sonic spaces, which re-territorialize the neocolonial space. The presentation secondarily investigates examples of visual fantasies and more restrictive spaces that emerge thanks to the persistent presence of soccer in West African films.
Bio
Vlad Dima has published has published numerous articles, mainly on French and francophone cinemas, but also on Francophone literature, American cinema and television. His first book, Sound Moves: Sonic Spaces in Djibril-Diop Mambety’s Films, is forthcoming with the Indiana University Press. He is currently working on a second project titled, The Beautiful Skin: Clothing, Football and Fantasy in West African cinema, 1964-2014.
