“Africanists at Work” is a discussion series in which alumni from around the world come to Madison to speak with undergraduates about building Africa-focused careers.
Distinguished alumni guests have included Lara Vojnov, Diagnostics Advisor with the World Health Organization; J. Stephen Morrison, senior vice president at the Center for Strategic and International Studies; Catherine Thompson, program director at the Peace and Security Funders Group; Ambassador (Ret.) John E. Lange, senior fellow for global health diplomacy at the United Nations Foundation; Leslie Zelenko, legislative assistant to Rep. Mark Pocan (D-W); and Tony Carroll, corporate lawyer and business advisor in international trade and investment.

On Tuesday, October 29, at 5 pm, the International Studies Major Program, African Studies Program and the Latin American, Caribbean & Iberian Studies (LACIS) Program are hosting Jacob Kushner for a career development session with UW-Madison students. Jacob is an award-winning journalist who writes about migration, conflict and extremism, and he investigates foreign aid, corruption and extrajudicial killings in East/Central Africa and the Caribbean.
As a Fulbright Fellow in 2017-18, Jacob investigated terrorism against immigrants in Germany. His work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, National Geographic, Atavist, NewYorker, Guardian, Foreign Policy, Newsweek, L.A. Times, and elsewhere.Originally from Milwaukee, Jacob received his B.A. in journalism and Latin American studies from UW-Madison. He also holds an M.A. in political journalism from Columbia University.
