Scott Straus is an award-winning author of The Order of Genocide: Race, Power, and War in Rwanda and Intimate Enemy and teachers courses on genocide, violence, human rights, and African politics.
Thomas J. Bassett
Professor of Geography
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Tom Bassett teaches courses on the geography of developing countries, Africa, and political ecology. Tom’s field research focuses on development and the environment in Côte d’Ivoire where he has conducted field research since 1981.
Carol Spindel

Carol Spindel is the author of In the Shadow of the Sacred Grove, a classic memoir of an American woman’s experience in northern Ivory Coast, named a Notable Book by the New York Times. Spindel wrote and narrated a radio documentary about the elections called “One Village Votes.” It aired on Illinois Public Media in late December and is currently available on PRX.
