Job post 1: Hiring English-fluent notetakers for a community forum on sustainability
Project Overview: Climate change continues to disproportionately impact communities of color, especially Black and Latinx communities. This project will bring together members of the Black community to amplify Black voices in the City of Madison’s environmental and climate planning efforts, through listening to Black perspectives, needs, and barriers of achieving sustainable living conditions to the city and county staff. The goal of the event is to empower Black communities towards activism and self-sufficiency.
Role Overview: We are seeking students who want to participate in these community forums as notetakers. In your role as a notetaker, you will be responsible for capturing the conversation of small groups (5-7 people) surrounding three topics: energy-saving in homes, heat and health, and tree canopy in neighborhoods. Each topic’s discussion will take about 30 minutes. It is vital that notetakers capture as much detail as possible, including who the speaker is and their response verbatim. You will also assist in recording and transcribing your small group’s discussions.
Learning Objectives: In this role, you will have the opportunity to hear a diverse range of perspectives on important environmental issues facing your city. You will get to network with members of your community and develop a culture-centric mindset towards social and environmental issues. You will aid in important decision making at community and local government levels and help gather data to be used in research.
Qualifications: Ideal candidates for this role must be quick and efficient at typing, an excellent listener, detail oriented and can think quickly in fast-paced environments. Candidates must be organized, clear and efficient communicators. Excellent grammar and spelling of the English language is required. Ideal candidates will have a strong sense of fairness, respect, and justice.
