Professor of History James Sweet, former director of the African Studies Program and current chair of the Department of History, was recently awarded a five-year endowed professorship to support his research. Sweet regularly teaches courses on comparative slavery, race and nation in the Atlantic world, comparative world history, the history of South Africa, and the history of Brazil. His research has concentrated on the social and cultural histories of Africans in the Atlantic world.
