This summer, the African Studies Program will host 25 emerging African leaders through the Mandela Washington Fellowship, the flagship program of President Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), sponsored by the U.S. State Department.
President Obama launched YALI in 2010 to support the next generation of African leaders in their efforts to boost economic prosperity and democracy. Fellows will be on campus from June 17-July 31 for an institute on public management including academic sessions, leadership development and community engagement.
Interested in becoming involved with the Mandela Washington Fellowship?
Once the Fellows arrive, opportunities will arise for short blocks of time with one or a small group of Fellows to help them with small trips such as shopping for personal needs, attending religious services, or exploring Madison and surrounding areas. If you would be interested in providing transportation and spending a short block of time with a Fellow or two, please contact yali@africa.webhosting.cals.wisc.edu to be placed on the volunteer e-mail list.
In addition, Fellows will attend dinners with host families in the Madison area to integrate them into the community. If you would be interested in hosting 1-2 Fellows for a family host dinner on Sunday, June 26 with possible follow-up dinners, if desired, please email yali@africa.webhosting.cals.wisc.edu.
