Call for Proposals

The West African Research Association, and the African Studies Program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison are hosting a virtual conference that centers on West Africa, for scholars based in the Midwest regions,* of North America.

We invite paper and panel proposals addressing West Africa-focused research from faculty and graduate students in all disciplines. The goals of the conference are to build a Midwest regional community of West African scholars; provide a space for scholarly exchange focused on West Africa; enhance research and teaching collaborations, and create mentoring opportunities.

The conference will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 26-27, 2022. Presenters will be organized into thematic panels of 3-4 presentations. All sessions will take place on the Zoom platform.

Please submit a paper or panel abstract of up to 250 words via the ONLINE SUBMISSION FORM. The deadline to submit proposals is Saturday, June 11 by 11:59 PM CDT. The conference is free but registration will be required. A registration link and schedule will be made available on the conference website by Tuesday, July 5. Participants will be able to register to present or attend when the registration link becomes available.

We particularly encourage submissions from scholars at Community Colleges and Minority Serving Institutions as well as those who otherwise are unable to travel regularly to the African Studies Association meetings and other scholarly conferences.

*Regions: We invite submissions from scholars affiliated with academic institutions or residents in the Midwestern states and provinces of the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
