Event Description

The area studies programs at Wisconsin and across the nation face unprecedented challenges in the wake of the U.S. Department of Education decision to discontinue funding for the National Resource Center (NRC) and Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) programs. These critical sources of federal funding have underwritten area studies programs across the nation for over half a century. At the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the NRC and FLAS programs infused our campus with over $4 million each year, including $2 million for student scholarships.

This event will examine what is at stake, articulate the value of international education at a moment of great uncertainty, and imagine potential futures for the fields of international and area studies. Vice Provost and Dean of the International Division Frances Vavrus will offer brief remarks before joining Jeremy Foltz (Interim Director of the African Studies Program and Professor of Agricultural and Applied Economics), Sara McKinnon (Director of the Latin American, Caribbean, and Iberian Studies Program and Professor of Rhetoric, Politics, and Culture), and Mark Copelovitch (Director, European Studies and Professor of Political Science and Public Affairs) for a future-focused roundtable discussion.

The event is free and open to the public.
