College For Kids highlights East Africa

Through th20150709_104300e University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Education’s College for Kids (CFK) program, former African Studies Program Outreach Coordinator Anne Wailula taught fifth graders from across Wisconsin about East Africa this month.

According to its website, CFK exposes students to a broad range of challenging academic areas, career options, and new areas of interest.  This three-week summer program of courses, demonstrations, tours, and discussions is sponsored by the UW-Madison School of Education, in cooperation with greater Dane County school districts, and with UW faculty, staff, and administration. In addition, this program provides a professional development opportunity for teachers, counselors, pre-service teachers, graduate students, and administrators to gain experience in working with diverse, motivated, and high achieving learners.

Wailula taught two groups during the two weeks she was instructing. She introduced students to several activities including designing their own kangas and trying out various uses for the African fabrics.
