African Studies undergraduate shortlisted for Brunel International African Poetry Prize

In a statement released Monday morning, African Studies Program certificate student Hiwot Adilow was announced as one of eight poets shortlisted for the 6th Brunel International African Poetry Prize.

Adilow studies anthropology with a certificate in African studies and is a member of the seventh cohort of the First Wave Hip Hop and Urban Arts Learning Community at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The Ethiopian-American poet and singer has been featured on CNN, National Public Radio and Wisconsin Public Television as well as a number of other publications. She previously worked at the African Studies Program as communications intern.

More than 1000 poets submitted entries for the £3,000 prize “aimed at the development, celebration and promotion of poetry from Africa.” A panel made up of poets and academics selected eight to move onto the final stage of the competition.
