The Department of Black Studies at the State University of New York at New Paltz invites applications for the following two tenure-track Assistant Professor positions:
African History/African Studies with a preferred subspecialty in Black/African American Studies. The primary responsibility will be to teach courses within the Department of Black Studies historical core, including courses such as Introduction to Africa, Pre-Colonial Africa, and Contemporary Africa. Required qualifications: Ph.D. in Black Studies, History or another relevant field. Exceptional ABD candidates with a firm completion date will be considered.
African American and/or African Diasporic Literature with a specialization in African American and/or African Diasporic Literature from any period. The primary responsibility will be to teach courses within the Department of Black Studies humanities core, including courses such as, Survey of Black American Literature, Rap & Spoken Word, Black Poetry & Drama, Black & Latinx Literature, Required qualifications: Ph.D. in Black Studies, English/Literature or another relevant field. Exceptional ABD candidates with a firm completion date will be considered.
For both positions, appointment begins in fall 2019. The teaching load is typically three courses per semester and include teaching required courses such as Introduction to Black Studies and Senior Seminar. Successful candidates will also be expected to demonstrate and maintain a strong scholarly agenda, to advise students, and to contribute to the life and work of the department and the college. Post-secondary teaching experience and Experience mentoring and/or advising students with diverse backgrounds are highly desired.
