UW-Madison’s African Studies Program is pleased to work with GEEO (Global Exploration for Educators) on developing a trip to Ethiopia in August 2020.
Global Exploration for Educators Organization (GEEO) is a 501c3 non-profit organization that runs professional development travel programs designed for teachers. Their general programs are open to all educators worldwide, but they also collaborate with universities and other organizations to run programs for their members and area educators.
GEEO’s mission is to encourage and assist teachers to travel abroad and then share their experiences in their classrooms. This specific trip will provide educators with an incredible professional development opportunity as they learn about the history, culture, and environment of Ethiopia through first-hand experience. Accompanying the trip will be Lauren Parnell Marino, Outreach Coordinator for the African Studies Program. She brings expertise about the African continent including issues of development and women’s activism and human rights. She will use her knowledge to enrich the educational components of the trip and to help participants contextualize what they are learning. Lauren will also share with teachers some of the unique resources and opportunities that are available through the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s African Studies Program to assist in lesson plan development.
